As Alpine School District kicks off its historic final school year, hallways across the district have been buzzing for a week with returning students settling back into their routines. But the elementary schools were still waiting on their final, smallest cohort to make the launch complete.
A Red Carpet Welcome
Outside the doors of Cascade Elementary on August 25th, that long-awaited first morning arrived with plenty of celebration. Students walked into the back courtyard along a bright red carpet lined with welcoming teachers, as parents hovered nearby with phones raised to capture every step. After some time on the playground, the children lined up at their classroom doors. When the big moment arrived, they let go of their parents' hands and followed their teachers inside to begin their first school adventure.
Building Familiarity Before the Bell
That smooth transition was no accident; it was the result of deliberate planning by staff and parents working together to build confidence before the first day arrived.
“We had a back to school night yesterday where the kids could get familiar with their classroom, have a little scavenger hunt to find their cubby and their mailbox and stuff like that,” said kindergarten teacher Molly Ellen.
For parents like Romy, preparing for the big day started long before that first morning bell..
“We did a lot of collaborating with the school to talk about how that first day would look. We were able to come here for our back-to-school night and open house, and also for that initial kindergarten assessment. And so through all of that our child was able to get exposed to the school staff, the teachers, and ultimately have a really personalized experience on that open house day.”
As a parent sending her first child into kindergarten, Romy noted that those early touchpoints helped turn first-day nerves into genuine excitement.
“It’s always an emotional experience, but the school has done such a great job at curating a very smooth first day and one that we could look forward to without much apprehension,” Romy shared. “I think with any kid, expectations rule the day. So if a kid knows what they can expect, there is a lot less anxiety around the experience and they honestly start looking forward to it, which is what happened for our kid.”
Easing into the Routine
Once inside the building, teachers kept the atmosphere light and welcoming, giving students space to explore their new environment on their first day.
“We don’t really do any curriculum. We just kind of do procedures. We show them the routines that we are mostly going to follow and then we introduce things slowly day by day,” explained kindergarten teacher Amy Martin. “We have toys that they can play with at the beginning, just to ease their way in. We want them to want to come back tomorrow.”
A New Chapter Begins
As the morning settled in and the classroom doors closed, parents were left to take a breath and process the milestone.
“I definitely will take a day or two, or more to recover. Because obviously it's a big transitional life moment, but honestly, we’re excited for the social and emotional benefits that come from kindergarten,” Romy said.
With the kindergarteners settled into their seats, the district's back-to-school season is complete. Every classroom is full, and the final school year of the Alpine School District is officially underway.
